Do I get paid?
Nope, but you get to participate in Croatia’s biggest sailing event for free, food and harbor fees included.
-
You wrote that the skipper is free if girls are onboard. We are 3 boys and at least 6 girls, maybe 8 girls. Does that mean that the skipper is free?
As long as there is minimum 1 girl onboard the skipper is free (no administrative cost).
-
What are the additional costs for me as a skipper? + How much money will I spend during a week as a skipper?
As a skipper you will pay your own travel costs to the event (flight). During the week(s) you will only pay what you spend at bars/restaurants during evenings when you're not onboard the yacht. Onboard the yacht you will only pay for beer/wine/drinks.

Hey The Yacht Week. Great concept!! But what is the reason for FAQ no. 9 - i.e. skipper free of charge if there is at least one girl onborad?? Doesn't make any sence to me!
Good question!
With no interference from us the event would be filled with 80% boys. Boys are in general more keen on sailing and since the concept is new, girls attend to be not as easily attracted to the event. Therefor we need to stimulate girl bookings and motivate all bookers to join with a mixed crew.
If you would arrive at the event and realize that there were only boys there I think you would be a little disappointed. :-)
It's also our belief that a mixed crew is the best way to travel. If it's only guys it has a tendency to be messy on board. It's tricky to get the event as good as possible. After 6 years experience as a skipper in Greece and Croatia I've seen that mixed bookings is a very good combination for a perfect vacation!
If you still feel that it's a little bit corny you more than welcome to contact us and discuss this matter. We would really like to get some feedback from all potential Yacht Week participants! How can we stimulate girl bookings?
This year so far we have a good girls/boys ratio on the event and we really wan't to keep it that way.
Best Regards,
William Wenkel

Which EU Skipper/Sailing certificates/licenses are accepted in Croatia? Would you have such list available? especially for France.
For France it is: LE PERMIS PLAISANCE- Option Eaux intérieures, - Option côtiére, - extension Grande plaisance fluviale, - extension Hauturiére.
If you want the whole list or information for other countries contact leo@theyachtweek.com and I'll send the list to you. -
What about the responsibility? Do I have to pay for a new boat if it sinks?
No, not all of it anyway. Should any damage occur to the boat the repair cost is shared by everybody onboard. The maximum cost is equal to the deposit left when when the boat is handed, and usually around €1000-1500.
-
What is expected of me as a skipper?
As a skipper you are expected to take the responsibility of handling the boat, which has been rented by a group of people who want to go sailing but don’t have enough competence to do it on their own. That means you get to go along on the boat as someone who has the know-how on sailing and who can tell people what to do when you set sail, lay anchor, etc.
-
Can you arrange with accomodation if I get there a few days before?
No, we can not. If you have to spend a night or two somewhere before or after the event we recommend that you book a bed in Split. A good place for searching and booking a place to stay is Hostelworld
-
Is the boat equipped with GPS / plotter / sea charts / life vests?
Yes, the boat is equipped with standard instruments, radio, GPS, plotter and relevant sea charts for the area. There is also a GSM mobile phone onboard that receives text message forecasts and weather alerts every day. Life vests are of course part of the standard equipment.
-
Is the minimum requirement to sail in Greece 2 people with navigational certificate (NO VHF-license)?
Requirements for Croatia
-Skippers license and passport of skipper + VHF certificate of skipper (will do with VHF of other person on the boat, but preferable with the same person.)Requirements for Greece
-Skippers license and passport of skipper.
-Skippers license and passport of co-skipper. If the co-skipper lacks license, then a written statement / signed assurance of the co-skipper that states that he/she is capable to handle the boat in case the skipper gets sick or similar is valid. -
I am going to work as a skipper for two weeks. Will I be able to wash and dry my clothes at the marina during the Saturday when I change boat and crew?
Yes, you will be able to do this in the Marina. There will be more info about this upon your arrival in Croatia.

Please see the answer to question number 2.

When do I have to be there?
The boats are handed over during the afternoon on the first day of the event (Saturday). Therefore you should aim to arrive at the airport in Split around lunch time.
-
Is there any way I can get to know the boat before the event starts?
No, the boats are usually rented out the week before the event and not returned before Satudary morning. Therefore you will not be able to see the boat beforehand. When the boat is handed over you get an introduction to how everything works onboard, and it is usually easy enough to go sailing straight away.

Hi!
If it works in a plane I'm pretty sure it's OK on a yacht. If there would be any problems concerning this we will solve it on site. No problem.

In the 'Join as a skipper' section it says the skippers get 'skipper gears' are they the same as the one selling in the 'shop 2010' ?
It's not the same but you will get a polo from SailRacing with "Skipper" printed on it.
-
Gets the skipper his own cabin? What is the maximum age a skipper can have?
If the boat has a one person cabin the skipper will have it but if not the skipper has to share cabin with someone in the crew.
We try to match the same age of skipper and crew. This mostly means no skippers older than 35. -

We're handling a large amount of skippers and it sometimes happens that we miss someone. If you want to be assigned a boat the best way is to send a mail to skipper@theyachtweek.com with the weeks you want to join.
